IPL Photofacials Q & A

What is an IPL photofacial?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. An IPL photofacial uses bursts of intense pulsed light to stimulate your skin’s natural healing and regeneration processes. The treatment evens out skin tone, reduces pore size, treats sun damage, and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, while helping your skin look rejuvenated and refreshed.

IPL photofacials can also be a good choice for treating hyperpigmentation that occurs with rosacea.

What happens during an IPL photofacial treatment?

IPL photofacial treatments use a special handheld device to deliver broad-spectrum light energy deep below the skin’s surface. As the light reaches the target area, the tissue absorbs the light energy, which triggers regeneration and healing, as well as the development of new collagen and elastin so your skin looks and feels firmer and more resilient. Collagen production also helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and it can even prevent new lines from forming.

Since the focused IPL beams are directed to the deeper layers of tissue, the upper layers remain untouched and unaffected. This means you don’t have to worry about surface skin damage like with some harsher treatments.

Most IPL photofacial treatments can be completed in a half-hour or less. Once your treatment is complete, you can get right back to your regular routine, because there’s no downtime. Your skin might look a little pinkish or flushed, similar to the effects of a mild sunburn, but this aftereffect is temporary and resolves soon after treatment.

What kind of results can an IPL photofacial achieve?

IPL photofacials can help your skin look smoother, reducing the appearance of fine lines and enlarged pores while also evening out your skin tone so your skin doesn’t look blotchy or sun-damaged. In addition, treatments can improve your skin’s texture so your skin feels softer to the touch.

How many treatments do I need to achieve results?

The results of IPL photofacials are subtle, so you don’t have to worry about a dramatic or obvious change in your appearance. Instead, results become more noticeable over time as your collagen production increases and your skin feels and looks firmer and more youthful. Most women and men find they can achieve maximum benefits in about four to six treatments, with treatments spaced about four weeks apart.
