Laser Hair Removal Q & A
How do lasers work to remove hair?
Laser hair removal relies on a scientific process called thermolysis, whereby heat absorption destroys the hair follicle. During laser hair removal, a special handpiece emits highly focused laser energy that targets the hair follicle, heating up the follicle to destroy it and the hair root, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact and unharmed.
Today’s laser hair systems can be used on any type of hair and in just about any area of the body, including the face, arms, bikini area, back, chest, and legs.
What happens during laser hair removal?
First, you need to allow your hair to grow for a few weeks before your treatment. Just before your treatment, the staff at Seeker Professional Aesthetics trims your hair to just above the surface of your skin. This ensures your hair is all at the same length so treatment is more consistent.
Next, Dr. Seeker adjusts the laser to suit your skin type and tone and your hair texture and color (since dark hair absorbs laser energy more quickly than light hair). Dr. Seeker applies a cooling gel to your skin to keep you comfortable, then performs a test in a small area to make any final adjustments to the laser before proceeding to treat the entire area.
After your treatment, cool compresses or ice packs keep your skin comfortable and reduce any residual stinging or discomfort you might feel for a brief period after your session.
How will I feel after my treatment?
You may have some mild redness in the area for a day or so after your treatment. If you have very sensitive skin, the redness may persist a little longer. It’s also common to feel some mild discomfort or soreness in the treatment area for a day or two, especially if your skin is very sensitive.
You should be careful to avoid the sun while the area heals. Dr. Seeker provides you with complete care instructions before you leave the office.
How many laser hair removal treatments do I need?
Hair grows in cycles, so to eliminate hair, you need to have it treated during a specific time during its growth cycle. For most patients, that means they need about six treatments to make sure all hairs are treated at the optimal time to prevent regrowth. Your treatment plan is optimized for your specific needs.
